About the Host

Derwin SmileyDerwin Smiley is the Host of The Derwin Smiley Show, an Indianapolis-area television program that caters to community issues and interests. Mr. Smiley created the 30-minute, monthly program because serious times calls for serious conversations, and the show is a vehicle to balance the entertainment found in video games, music videos, chat rooms, and IPODs with serious and inspirational discussion.   The show broadcasts on WHMB Channel 40 once per month and reaches 1.8 million homes and 2.8 million individuals.  It is also distributed on the Internet, where Mr. Smiley receives nearly 1,000 worldwide hits per month. Mr. Smiley aims to syndicate the community talk show nationally within the next 5-years.

In addition to hosting The Derwin Smiley Show, Mr. Smiley hosts community events.  Since the nonprofit was founded five years ago, Mr. Smiley has organized an annual back to school event featuring distinguished keynotes including Tavis Smiley, Talk Show Host and Publisher; Dr. Eugene White, Superintendent of IPS; and others. Derwin partnered with AT&T and the Indianapolis Housing Agency to distribute free backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts to needy Indianapolis-area students as well.  Derwin has also distributed over 10,000 holiday gifts to less fortunate families in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, US Marines, and Toys for Tots.

With over 10-years of experience working with youth, including 5-years as a middle school teacher for Indianapolis Public Schools, Mr. Smiley is a dynamic facilitator that uses ingenious illustrations to drive his points home.  For this reason, his scheduled speaking engagements always draw large crowds. Some of his recent keynote presentations to youth and young adults include:

- Ball State University Black Issues Conference (2006)

- AT&T Martin Luther King Day Celebration (2007)

- IndyParks Bethel Park Breakfast with the Boys (2006)
